Quinta Mazatlan invites you to join us for a volunteer morning at the Tiny Forest located at Main Library! We'll be helping the forest grow through weeding, litter pick-up, and documenting the biodiversity already living in the forest on Saturday, July 12 from 9-11AM.
We encourage volunteers to be prepared to be outdoors by bringing a hat, garden gloves, refillable water bottle, close-toed shoes, and anything else they need to feel comfortable outside.

It's good to move slow and look close when you're visiting Quinta Mazatlan. Did you know more than 1,000 species have been reported from the park? These are just a few of the recent observations - read below for names and notes!
1. Eastern Screech-Owl. This is a nestling bird, told by its less defined plumage, peeking out from its nest cavity in a dead palm tree.
2. Gulf Fritillary (caterpillar). These spikey beauties feast on passionflowers (plants in the genus passiflora).
3. Spot-tailed Dasher. These beautiful turquoise-eyed dragonflies are mostly found in south Texas and Florida in the US.
4. Berlandier's Fiddlewood. These large shrubs bloom and fruit profusely, and are a favorite of pollinating insects and frugivorous birds.
5. Crooked-legged Bee. These species in the genus Ancyloscelis get their name because of their distinctly crooked legs. They tend to prefer tubular flowers like morning glories, such as this Alamo Vine (Distimake dissectus).

This "tropical chicken" is another one of our exclusive Rio Grande Valley birds—you won't find them anywhere else in the U.S.!
FUN FACTS
🟤 When you're in or near our native thorn forest, listen for the chachalacas' raucous morning chorus. You'll likely hear the birds before you see them.
🟤 Their calls can also signal a change in the weather, like an approaching storm.
🟤 Plain Chachalacas are the only species in the bird family Cracidae to range north into the U.S. Over-hunting has left many of their fellow species endangered.

It's good to move slow and look close when you're visiting Quinta Mazatlan. Did you know more than 1,000 species have been reported from the park? These are just a few of the recent observations - read below for names and notes! 1. Eastern Screech-Owl. This is a nestling bird, told by its less defined plumage, peeking out from its nest cavity in a dead palm tree. 2. Gulf Fritillary (caterpillar). These spikey beauties feast on passionflowers (plants in the genus passiflora). 3. Spot-tailed Dasher. These beautiful turquoise-eyed dragonflies are mostly found in south Texas and Florida in the US. 4. Berlandier's Fiddlewood. These large shrubs bloom and fruit profusely, and are a favorite of pollinating insects and frugivorous birds. 5. Crooked-legged Bee. These species in the genus Ancyloscelis get their name because of their distinctly crooked legs. They tend to prefer tubular flowers like morning glories, such as this Alamo Vine (Distimake dissectus).
