In this talk, Heep will highlight several species connected to Runyon’s work, weaving together ecological insight, historical context, and personal anecdotes gathered from decades of studying and growing native plants. 🌿Mike Heep has been at the forefront of native plant conservation in the Rio Grande Valley since the 1980s. As we close out 2025, we’re reflecting on the many meaningful ways the McAllen Farmers Market helped our community access fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables. This year marked incredible growth, with 7,815 WIC FMNP vouchers distributed and $2,200 in Double Up Bucks provided to help local families stretch their food dollars and shop healthier. Later in the year, we were proud to partner with the Raul Tijerina Jr. Foundation and Texas Local Food to launch Farmers Market Buddy Bucks for.a limited time, encouraging neighbors to bring a friend and discover even more locally grown produce together. What an incredible year it has been. Better late than never, right? 😊 On Saturday, December 13th, we had such an amazing day! We kicked things off with a bird walk Santa Ana & Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuges where we spotted some fantastic birds, including verdins and a merlin. 🦅 Later that day, Dr. Andrea Contina visited the store and gave an absolutely fascinating talk about his migratory bird research! It’s amazing to see how technology is helping us understand more about these incredible creatures. 🌎✨ Fast forward to the following Saturday, and we had the privilege of hosting Andrew Orgill and Tess Kelly from the Amos Rehabilitation Keep - ARK at UT Marine Science Institute and University of Texas Marine Science Institute. They shared their incredible work reducing window strikes on campus with Feather Friendly Bird Collision Deterrent Markers and gave us great tips on making our homes and businesses more bird-friendly. 🏡💚 Huge thanks to all the amazing speakers, bird guides, and our wonderful WBU community members for making these Saturdays so special!
