The first Purple Martin scouts were reported in Edinburg around February 19th — a sure sign that spring is underway in the Rio Grande Valley. Fun fact (according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology): despite the term “scout,” these early arrivals aren’t checking the area for the rest of the flock. They’re actually older martins returning to the same nesting sites they’ve used before. Younger birds making their first trip north typically arrive several weeks later.
