There are also winter residents, such as the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, a woodpecker that laps up tree sap and any trapped insects with its special brush-tipped tongue.
Learn more about the plant and animal activity during this time of year tomorrow for our weekly "Walk With A Naturalist" program, offered Wednesdays from 9 AM - 10 AM. Included with park admission.

Better late than never, right? 😊 On Saturday, December 13th, we had such an amazing day! We kicked things off with a bird walk Santa Ana & Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuges where we spotted some fantastic birds, including verdins and a merlin. 🦅
Later that day, Dr. Andrea Contina visited the store and gave an absolutely fascinating talk about his migratory bird research! It’s amazing to see how technology is helping us understand more about these incredible creatures. 🌎✨
Fast forward to the following Saturday, and we had the privilege of hosting Andrew Orgill and Tess Kelly from the Amos Rehabilitation Keep - ARK at UT Marine Science Institute and University of Texas Marine Science Institute. They shared their incredible work reducing window strikes on campus with Feather Friendly Bird Collision Deterrent Markers and gave us great tips on making our homes and businesses more bird-friendly. 🏡💚
Huge thanks to all the amazing speakers, bird guides, and our wonderful WBU community members for making these Saturdays so special! You all make every weekend unforgettable. 🌿🦉

January averages as our coolest and driest month of the year. Still, there are some native plants in bloom or fruit such as the Googly-eyed Vine, which provides unique-looking fruit for birds.

🦅 Later that day, Dr. Andrea Contina visited the store and gave an absolutely fascinating talk about his migratory bird research! It’s amazing to see how technology is helping us understand more about these incredible creatures. 🌎✨ Fast forward to the following Saturday, and we had the privilege of hosting Andrew Orgill and Tess Kelly from the Amos Rehabilitation Keep - ARK at UT Marine Science Institute and University of Texas Marine Science Institute. They shared their incredible work reducing window strikes on campus with Feather Friendly Bird Collision Deterrent Markers and gave us great tips on making our homes and businesses more bird-friendly. 🏡💚 Huge thanks to all the amazing speakers, bird guides, and our wonderful WBU community members for making these Saturdays so special! You all make every weekend unforgettable. 🌿🦉 Happy birding, from the RGV's friendly backyard bird feeding specialists! 💚 🐦 #wbumcallen #rgvbirds #backyardbirding #mcallentexas #riograndevalley #Riograndevalleytexas
