The Tamaulipan Thornforest and other native habitats in the Rio Grande Valley support species found nowhere else in the U.S. This month, we’re planting more than 2,000 native plants through initiatives like Tiny Forests, School Butterfly Gardens, and Community Plant Giveaways. An additional 20,000 plants will be added this fall as part of the Center for Urban Ecology expansion at Quinta Mazatlán. Quinta Mazatlán is also hosting over 30 educational programs, including the VIP Night “Very Important Plants” on October 16. McAllen’s trees contribute over $5 million annually in ecosystem services and help drive eco-tourism. Cacti are some of our most beloved plants. They grow as small little buttons, like those of the Junior Tom Thumb Cactus, up to massive sizes like the 12 - 15 foot tall Texas Plains Prickly Pear. They're food for people, for wildlife, and add so much beauty to our spaces. Learn more about cacti in the RGV with Ken King, co-author of the fantastic field guide "Plants of Deep South Texas", as our guest presenter this Thursday at 6 PM. Our friends from Quinta Mazatlan World Birding Center will be leading a tour of our Tiny Forest at Main Library this Saturday, October 4 at 2PM! Did you know that birds get disoriented by our lights on their long journeys? Please turn off your lights from 11 PM to 6 AM to help keep them safe! Windows are also a big danger. It's a sad statistic that over a billion birds die in glass collisions per year. You can make your windows safer with bird-friendly treatments. Its hard to imagine exactly what the Rio Grande Valley used to look like. For example, we can't know specifically what the habitats at Quinta Mazatlan looked like before Spanish colonization. But we do have some idea of what things looked like in the region, based on early accounts from explorers, botanists, other records. If you want to learn more of what we do know about the RGV's ecological past, join us on Thursday, October 2nd, for an enlightening presentation by Javier de León, Park Superintendent of Estero Llano Grande State Park. 🚨 Rare Bird Alert!🚨 A Northern Jacana was spotted this past Sunday (Sept 21) at Pintail Lake in the Santa Ana & Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuges! 🎉 This striking bird is typically found in coastal Mexico and Central America, so seeing one here is a real treat. Adults are a stunning mix of black and chestnut brown, with bright yellow accents on their face and wings. And those legs! With their long greenish-yellow legs and extra-long toes, they can literally walk on floating vegetation. 👣🌿 👏 Huge congrats to the dedicated birders who spotted it! And best of luck to anyone heading out in hopes of seeing it themselves—it was seen again this morning. Don’t forget your binoculars! Grackles

Boat-tailed grackles don't often make it down to the RGV, but it's worth noting the difference! They are so similar to Great-tailed grackles that they were considered one species until 1973. 👁️ The irises of Great-tailed are always yellow, however, Boat-tailed Grackles’ eye color ranges from dark brown to yellow, meaning iris color alone isn’t a reliable way to tell them apart. 🟣Great-tailed Grackles are slightly larger, have a flat crown, and their iridescence shines more purplish. 🟢Boat-tailed Grackles are a bit smaller, with a rounded head, and more blue-green iridescence. 📷 Happy birding, from the RGV's friendly backyard bird feeding specialists! 💛🐦 #wbumcallen #rgvbirds #backyardbirding #mcallentexas #riograndevalley #Riograndevalleytexas #ZEISS #ZEISSNature #birdwatching
