There's been lots of activity in the park this week, with recent sightings of Curve-winged Metalmark, Common Pauraque, and the usual (and beautiful) Buff-bellied Hummingbirds. Curve-winged Metalmarks, despite hosting on the commonly seen Mexican Caesalpinia tree, are fairly uncommon in the Rio Grande Valley. Malachite in the park! These large butterflies are mostly found in Mexico and the tropics of Central and South America, but can be seen in the Rio Grande Valley and Florida in the United States. Their bright green color is very distinctive among butterflies in the area, especially in combination with their large size (about the size of a Monarch butterfly).

These are three, approximately 5 x 5 ft, cardboard murals created with pieces of assorted recycled cardboard and tempera paint. The objective was to design these pieces using recycled materials, mirroring the way Vultures clean and recycle our environment. The community actively participated in the effort by painting the cardboard pieces, which we then assembled. The Hinovations team, Raquel Hinojosa and Lupe Hernandez, worked their feathers off (lol) for nearly six hours and brought it all together. 🌿🦋 So many good things happening lately! It’s been hard to find time to share them all. A couple Saturdays ago, November 1st, we had the honor of participating in the Texas Butterfly Festival at the National Butterfly Center There was a whole kaleidoscope of butterflies—and of people—out enjoying them! 🦋✨ A huge thank-you to our gracious hosts and to everyone who stopped by our booth to say hello. In the afternoon, we were treated to a fascinating presentation by Lynette Castillo from Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park - Texas Parks and Wildlife.
