Mexico celebrates its Independence Day today! Fun facts: 🇲🇽 The GOLDEN EAGLE is Mexico's national bird. 🇲🇽 As depicted on the flag, per legend, a god directed the Aztecs to site their capital (now Mexico City) where they'd find an eagle eating a snake atop a cactus (though some argue the bird was more likely originally a Crested Caracara). 🇲🇽 Mexico has about 1,100 SPECIES OF BIRDS. 🇲🇽 And huge populations! Mexico is considered "the world’s center of diversity for a number of bird groups" including vireos, wrens, and jays. 🇲🇽 Today marks the FIRST RALLYING CRY for independence—not the war's end. 🇲🇽 Independence was actually won from Spain with the Treaty of Córdoba in August 1821. 🇲🇽 8 COUNTRIES in Central America celebrate independence this month. 🇲🇽 🇲🇽 Mexico is the likely birthplace of the DOMESTICATED CHILI PEPPER. 🇲🇽 Chilies are thought to have originated in Brazil, then were spread by birds, which can't feel peppers' heat and don't destroy the seeds in their stomachs. Scientists have found that chilies were cultivated in Mexico thousands of years ago! Speaking of chilies, if you're having trouble with squirrels or other critters, try our exclusive HOT PEPPER BIRD FOODS. Squirrels can't handle the heat! https://order.wbu.com/mcallen/bird-food/hot-pepper Happy birding, from the RGV's friendly backyard bird feeding experts! ❤️🐦 #wbumcallen #rgvbirds #backyardbirding #mcallentexas #riograndevalley #Riograndevalleytexas #birding #birds #shoplocal #supportsmallbusinessowners #nativeplants #gardening
