Today was an excellent day, not so hot, to be out on the trails birding. ✨🌳On our Birding for Beginners Bird Tour, the highlight was everything seen, but the hatch year birds following their parents did steal the show. 😃We had Black-crested Titmouse and Green Jay parents showing their babies the way of being a bird. From hoping on the trees to foraging for food, it was a treat to see this stage of their life. Tonight is another opportunity to join us for Flashlight Nights, with the tour starting at 8:30 PM. Last week, guests were treated to two large Lepidopterans - a Malachite butterfly and several Black Witch moths - along with seeing a newly emerged cicada drying its wings! Malachite butterflies are gorgeous, with a combination of green and black, and are mostly found to our south, from Mexico into South America. They host on plants in the Acanthaceae family, which includes Ruellias! Black Witch moths are equally gorgeous, with intricate patterns of light and dark brown, along with iridescent patches that turn purple or blue in the right lighting. They are thought to be migratory, with movements north into the US between June - October - they've even been observed in Canada! They can also breed here in the RGV, where they host on plants in the Bean Family (Fabaceae).
