Lowrider Culture in the United States August 22 - November 15, 2026 at the imasmuseum Sponsored locally by clarkchevrolet clarkknapprgv One of the incredible outcomes of this exhibition was the outpouring of support and engagement from the local lowrider community. IMAS Curator Marcelo Ramirez Garcia Rojas connected with several leaders of the local clubs and invited them to “bring us the Desert Roses of the Rio Grande Valley.” Smithsonian’s traveling exhibitions are intended to do just that, encourage Affiliates like IMAS to take the exhibition and make it their own, resulting in a unique reflection of our community. As soon as you walked into the museum, you were greeted by a 1948 Chevrolet Fleetline customized by Rogelio “Lolo” Loera with pinstriping by Edgar “El Indio” Solis. You will also see car club plaques from the Latin Fantasy, Players4Life, Unique Look, Veteranos, Aztec Empire, and more. These pieces reflect our community and their passion for the art and science of restoring, maintaining, and working on a lowrider. We're thrilled to announce that we'll be hosting Cyrus Harp of paleoforaging as our keynote presenter at this year's Planta Nativa on October 8th! Harp is an excellent foraging instructor, ethnobiology researcher, and paleolithic technology expert. He shares in-depth information on how indigenous peoples used native plants in Texas, along with ways we can still use them today. Harp is also the author of "Native Food Plants of Texas: An Austin Forager’s Guide Based on Indigenous Knowledge", which will be available to purchase and get signed at the event. Planta Nativa also features a marketplace with native plant sales, seed giveaways, food & beverages, and educational outreach from community experts sharing their knowledge and work. This event is a great way to learn about native plants, buy some to take home to your garden, and connect with other plant enthusiasts in the relaxing atmosphere of Quinta Mazatlan after dark. Planta Nativa is held at Quinta Mazatlan on October 8th, 6:30 - 9:30 pm. The keynote presentation will start at 7:30 pm. Only six cities were named 2026 IFEA World Festival & Event Cities, with McAllen among the communities recognized for their outstanding support of festivals and events. Quinta Mazatlán earned eight Gold awards, including Best Green Program for Planta Nativa, Best Educational Program for ReFest, Best Overall Entertainment Program for Thursday Night Live, and Best Children’s Programming. Quinta Mazatlán also received a Silver Pinnacle Award for Monarch Fest. Also congratulations to the McAllen Public Library, McAllen Holiday Parade, MCC Sunset Live and McAllen Public Works for receiving awards. It was an honor to be recognized on the national stage.
