Have you ever met charismatic Coral Vine? 👋This rapidly climbing perennial, native to Mexico and Central America was introduced to the RGV around the Gilded Age, and is known well by bees, small songbirds and local ecologists prioritizing habitat restoration! 🌳✨While beautiful, Coral Vine tends to blanket over the canopy of trees and other plant life, displacing native vegetation--This STEM Stops, explore the species native to the Rio Grande Valley, those introduced and what you can do to help support habitat. #invasivespeciesawarenessweek#STEM#plantnative#southtexasecology#quintamazatlan#exploremcallen
By 1996, Myth had been open for 5 years. We had seen the Death of Superman, the rise of Magic the Gathering, but we didn’t know what the Pokemon TCG would bring. I’m not sure anyone really did. And when I say we, I mean my grandpa, grandma, and my mom who all worked at the store before I was born.
By the time I came around in 1998, Pokemon proved to be a long lasting contender in mainstream pop culture. I’m not sure if it’s because I grew up around the store, but naturally Pikachu was my favorite thing. I dressed up in a Pikachu costume for years, yelling “Pika Pika”. My family thought something was wrong with me.
Pokemon came in waves throughout my life as it does for so many others, I remember my first big buy of first edition cards for the store. I remember all the stories our customers shared about the cards that had been through fire, flood, or stolen. I also remember when I had around 100 boxes of Scarlet & Violet that nobody and I mean NOBODY wanted…until one day I showed up at the store and they were all gone. Pokemon is one of my favorite things to sell because like life, it comes in WAVES. I’ve seen Pokemon fly off the shelves, I’ve seen Pokemon sit for years…I’ve seen people get angry and happy and excited all over these cards. The devastation of losing your childhood possessions, the joy of pulling the card you’d been after
One Christmas, my grandparents gifted me this Pikachu PiggyBank. Written in my grandmother’s handwriting, she wrote “Kali, Grandpa and I choose you!” I know we don’t chose our family, but everyday when you wake up you get to chose how close you are with those around you. My grandparents chose me, my siblings, my mom and dad over and over again. They chose us when they didn’t need to, when it was inconvenient, when it was unbearable because they loved us. When I think about Pokemon, or Pikachu, or any thing that I sell in the store really, I think about these moments. I think about how my grandpa chose me to sell Pokemon to everyone who loved it and what a wild ride that’s been. I think how it healed me and healed others who were struggling.
And anyway, thats what Pokemon means to me. I guess it really means everything.
CineSol Film Festival mourns the loss of our founder, Evy Ledesma Galan. A visionary whose heart, passion, and belief in storytelling brought this festival to life.
Evy Ledesma Galan founded the CineSol Latino Film Festival in 1993. She worked out of her family home, making phone calls and inviting people she only knew by reputation. And they came! Evy, along with the board, would rack up long distance phone bills and film projector rental fees. She was able to get films, projectors, directors, and movie stars! All from her home in Harlingen. And pre-internet!
As our mission statement says: "we celebrate achievement in the art of filmmaking. CineSol is dedicated to furthering the art, craft and business of screenwriters and filmmakers and recognizing their artistic contributions." Evy believed in that dream. She felt the Rio Grande Valley needed an outlet or showcase for independent Latino films.
It was Evy who provided the Texas Border Region with its first film festival ever, including cultural art events in Matamoros and Reynosa. CineSol has traveled throughout the border region, by having the film festival in South Padre Island, Harlingen, Edinburg, McAllen, Mission, and Brownsville. She was festival director from 1993-2003.
It was through CineSol Latino Film Festival that she met filmmaker Hector Galan, who eventually became the love of her life.
CineSol was never just about films; it was about people, culture, and the shared experience of seeing ourselves reflected on screen. Through tireless dedication and deep love for the art of cinema, Evy created a space where Latino voices were uplifted, Latino stories were honored, and a film community was formed. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit lives on in every frame projected, every filmmaker encouraged, and every audience member moved.
Evy Ledesma Galan, a true champion of latino culture, film, and artists. Thank you for the vision, the heart, and the stories. Your legacy lives on through the film festival and community you created.
We are deeply grateful for all she gave and will carry her legacy forward. Rest in peace. 🎬

Grateful for Water
On Exhibit at the IMAS
January 14 - April 26, 2026
The Grateful for Water art contest is an annual initiative hosted by McAllen Public Utility’s Water Education Team, designed specifically for high school students who live in McAllen. The contest encourages students to explore the value of water in their daily lives, reflecting on its importance in our community, environment, and future. Participants are challenged to express their creativity while considering the role water plays in sustaining life and the responsibility we all share to conserve this vital resource.
2025 marked the third year of MPU hosting this contest, which featured an impressive array of paintings and drawings from students across the city. The theme this past year was “Clean Water, Clean Future.” Each piece highlights water and its beauty, significance, and the importance of smart water usage, offering unique perspectives and creative interpretations of the theme. The students’ artwork provides viewers with an engaging and meaningful visual experience.
The winning and participating artworks are proudly displayed in this exhibit as a celebration of creativity, education, and environmental stewardship. Through this contest, McAllen Public Utility aims to inspire a deeper appreciation for water among our city’s youth and encourage them to become thoughtful stewards of this essential resource. We are grateful to all the students who participated and hope their work motivates the community to reflect on the importance of water in daily life.

In 1969 he won the Silver Medal Award for watercolor in the Fourth Annual Exhibit of the Cowboy Artists of America, and his work often focused on contemporary and historic western scenes in a realist and sometimes impressionistic way.
This painting of a fashionable vaquero in front of a grand vista is on display currently at Nuevo Santander Gallery.

Grateful for Water On Exhibit at the IMAS January 14 - April 26, 2026 The Grateful for Water art contest is an annual initiative hosted by McAllen Public Utility’s Water Education Team, designed specifically for high school students who live in McAllen. We are grateful to all the students who participated and hope their work motivates the community to reflect on the importance of water in daily life. https://theimasonline.org/grateful-for-water/ #mcallenpublicworks #ExploreIMAS #mcallen #mcallentx

New Arrival! Nicholas Firfires CA (1917 - 1990) "Mexican Vaquero," 10" x 8", oil on canvas. Early Cowboy Artists of America painter Nicholas Firfires grew up living and learning the cowboy way of life, from breaking horses to herding cattle. His time on the big ranches of California would inform his themes as a painter and illustrator. #nicholasfirfires #nuevosantandergallery #westernart #cowboyartistsofamerica #vaquero
