This time on Tiny Forest Perspectives, we're taking a look at some observations of #TxPollinators made during the Texas Pollinator Bioblitz. One of the main takeaways was that purposefully seeded wildflowers, along with plants that popped up on their own in the forests, were among the most active with pollinators. This is in line with many studies that show that weedy plants - or "spontaneous flora" - create valuable habitat for pollinators in urban and rural environments. Want to learn more about McAllen's Tiny Forests? Join our Urban Ecologist, John Brush, for his presentation this Thursday (Oct. 29) here at Quinta Mazatlan. Brush will provide insights into the Tiny Forest method, share many photos of the results, and show how Tiny Forests are one way we can work towards creating healthier urban environments for people and wildlife. Program runs from 6 PM - 7 PM and is included with park admission fees ($3 adults, $2 seniors & children).

"Church of Corrales", by Bob Franklin, 24 x 36", pastel. The historical San Ysidro Church of Corrales, New Mexico is the subject of this vibrant pastel rendition by Texas based artist Bob Franklin, whose rich deep hues further add to the appeal of the old church. The one story adobe church was first built in 1868 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980. MEZCLA MESTIZA A Solo Exhibition by Alexis Marie Ramos Join us at Hinovations Art Gallery for the opening reception of Mezcla Mestiza, a multidisciplinary exhibition by Rio Grande Valley artist and South Texas College art professor Alexis Marie Ramos, presented in conjunction with the McAllen First Friday Art Walk. Through a vibrant exploration of culture, color, materials, and artistic traditions, Ramos examines the connections between identity, history, and the cultural practices passed down through generations. Drawing inspiration from her borderland heritage, childhood memories, traditional foods, folk medicine, and pre-Columbian mysticism, Ramos explores the many influences that shape Mexican and mestizo identity. Mezcla Mestiza invites viewers to consider the relationship between art and cultural memory, honoring the traditions that connect us to our ancestors while celebrating the diversity of our shared heritage.
