Melvin Warren was an early Cowboy Artist of America artist and gold medal winner who worked in both painting and sculpture. His years working on ranches in Texas and California gave him insight and appreciation for the life of the working cowboy. While at Texas Christian University pursuing a degree in the Fine Arts, cowboys and western scenes became his primary subject. The subject for this piece, the longhorn known as "Commander," was rendered in both painting and the detailed bronze sculpture you see here. Early Cowboy Artists of America painter Nicholas Firfires grew up living and learning the cowboy way of life, from breaking horses to herding cattle. His time on the big ranches of California would inform his themes as a painter and illustrator. In 1969 he won the Silver Medal Award for watercolor in the Fourth Annual Exhibit of the Cowboy Artists of America, and his work often focused on contemporary and historic western scenes in a realist and sometimes impressionistic way.
