Our first Horse Crippler cactus (Echinocactus texensis) flowers are out and White-eyed Vireos and Curve-billed Thrashers are singing; it's been beautiful in the park. Guests are welcome to join the Walk with a Naturalist program tomorrow, 9am - 10am, to learn more about the flora and fauna of Quinta Mazatlan. Program is included with park admission ($3 adults, $2 seniors & children).

By the numbers, March and April are the best months of the year to see the Valley's various cacti in bloom. We're already seeing species like Junior Tom Thumb cactus and Pincushion Cactus with flowers, while others like the Ladyfinger cactus and the Horse Crippler cactus are developing flower buds. Oh, and if you're looking for areas to potentially go enjoy cacti and other spring wildflowers, we have a list of sites across the RGV that are good for walking and enjoying our local plants and animals. Join us for our weekly Walk With A Naturalist program tomorrow, 9 AM - 10 AM, as we approach the end of winter. Migratory flocks of Red-winged Blackbirds are already starting to arrive at feeders again and early spring-blooming flowers are popping up across our landscapes. Program is included park admission.

February is a month of love- but also a time to learn about invasive species that we don't exactly love! This Saturday we'll be kicking off National Invasive Species Awareness Week by taking a walk around the Quinta grounds to learn which species are invasive and what is being done to mitigate their spread. Join us Saturday 10am-11pm for an informative walk, included with park admission. Coral Vine will clamor and climb onto vegetation to the point of depriving it of sunlight and eventually killing or radically altering the growth whatever it covers. Its pink flowers and seeds are prolific making it difficult to eradicate- not to mention its enormous tuberous root stalk. It's just one of the many invasive plants that we're working to control in the park for the sake of more biodiversity-friendly habitats.
