Tonight is another opportunity to join us for Flashlight Nights, with the tour starting at 8:30 PM. We do require registration for Flashlight Nights - you can purchase admission at: http://events.ticketleap.com/events/" target="_blank">events.ticketleap.com/events/quintamazatlan. Last week, guests were treated to two large Lepidopterans - a Malachite butterfly and several Black Witch moths - along with seeing a newly emerged cicada drying its wings! Malachite butterflies are gorgeous, with a combination of green and black, and are mostly found to our south, from Mexico into South America. They host on plants in the Acanthaceae family, which includes Ruellias! Black Witch moths are equally gorgeous, with intricate patterns of light and dark brown, along with iridescent patches that turn purple or blue in the right lighting. They are thought to be migratory, with movements north into the US between June - October - they've even been observed in Canada! They can also breed here in the RGV, where they host on plants in the Bean Family (Fabaceae).

Mothing by Moonlight is back! Join us on Saturday, July 18, 9 PM - Midnight, as we celebrate the start of #NationalMothWeek with a night of nocturnal discovery and exploration. We'll have mothing stations set up along a dimly lit trail for guests to see our RGV moths and a variety of other insects. Guests can learn about bats at our Bat Detector station, make moth-themed arts and crafts, and enjoy the atmosphere of Quinta Mazatlan after dark.
