Thank you to the City Commission for recognizing October 2026 as Native Plant Month in the City of McAllen! This proclamation recognized the importance of native plants for our community, highlighting their value for people and wildlife. Native plants cool our cities through shade and evapotranspiration, host our favorite butterflies, provide food and habitat for our unique birds, and help us conserve water. We're proud to say that through the Tiny Forest initiative alone, the City of McAllen has been able to add 12,000 native plants in the past 4 years. We're also excited to say that through the McAllen Schoolyard Forests project, funded by Texas A&M Forest Service and in collaboration with McAllen Parks and Recreation and McAllen ISD, there will be 6 new Tiny Forests planted at schools in the upcoming months.
