Skillfully employing a bit of "Trompe L'oeil" (trick of the eye) technique, this oil on linen painting with a solid frame of mesquite has the ability to make you look up close to see if the silver heart Milagro or perhaps the handkerchief is not tacked directly on. This completely unique piece - a would be dedication to an unnamed Soldadera, the name given to women who fought alongside the men in the Mexican Revolutionary War, is a heartfelt reminder of an important historical moment when women fought not just for the cause, but as a way of breaking oppressive gender roles. "Mi Soldadera", by Berry Fritz, 16 x 20", oil with mesquite frame. On display and available for purchase at Nuevo Santander Gallery.
