Thank you to the City Commission for recognizing October 2026 as Native Plant Month in the City of McAllen! This proclamation recognized the importance of native plants for our community, highlighting their value for people and wildlife. Native plants cool our cities through shade and evapotranspiration, host our favorite butterflies, provide food and habitat for our unique birds, and help us conserve water. We're proud to say that through the Tiny Forest initiative alone, the City of McAllen has been able to add 12,000 native plants in the past 4 years. We're also excited to say that through the McAllen Schoolyard Forests project, funded by Texas A&M Forest Service and in collaboration with McAllen Parks and Recreation and McAllen ISD, there will be 6 new Tiny Forests planted at schools in the upcoming months. Make sure to check out the "Green is Cool" video series on the City of McAllen TX Government pages highlighting some of the different trees that are being planted at the Schoolyard Forests!

We're thrilled to announce that we'll be hosting Cyrus Harp of paleoforaging as our keynote presenter at this year's Planta Nativa on October 8th! Harp is an excellent foraging instructor, ethnobiology researcher, and paleolithic technology expert. He shares in-depth information on how indigenous peoples used native plants in Texas, along with ways we can still use them today. Harp is also the author of "Native Food Plants of Texas: An Austin Forager’s Guide Based on Indigenous Knowledge", which will be available to purchase and get signed at the event. Planta Nativa also features a marketplace with native plant sales, seed giveaways, food & beverages, and educational outreach from community experts sharing their knowledge and work. This event is a great way to learn about native plants, buy some to take home to your garden, and connect with other plant enthusiasts in the relaxing atmosphere of Quinta Mazatlan after dark.
