Commissioner Pepe Cabeza de Vaca, representing District 6, has officially proclaimed October 2025 as Native Plant Month in McAllen. Native plants are vital to our natural and cultural heritage and to the very air we breathe. The Tamaulipan Thornforest and other native habitats in the Rio Grande Valley support species found nowhere else in the U.S. This month, we’re planting more than 2,000 native plants through initiatives like Tiny Forests, School Butterfly Gardens, and Community Plant Giveaways. An additional 20,000 plants will be added this fall as part of the Center for Urban Ecology expansion at Quinta Mazatlán. Quinta Mazatlán is also hosting over 30 educational programs, including the VIP Night “Very Important Plants” on October 16. McAllen’s trees contribute over $5 million annually in ecosystem services and help drive eco-tourism. Native plants save water, support wildlife, and beautify our city, for today and for generations to come.
