#throwback to a view of McAllen Gin Co. - approx 1915-1925. During this period McAllen's agricultural economy flourished, driven by cotton and other crops. Early settlement and economy: McAllen was founded in 1904 as a small farming community. Settlers were attracted to the fertile soil and favorable climate, and the economy was driven by the cotton and citrus industries. Expansion through railroads: The arrival of the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway in 1904 was a major factor in the area's development, turning McAllen into a key hub for trade and commerce. Agricultural growth: By 1911, an estimated 5,000 acres were under cultivation in East McAllen, with cotton being one of the major crops. The Valley Cotton Growers Association was established in 1915, and cotton production played a vital role in the U.S. economy, particularly during World War I.
