New Arrival! Nicholas Firfires CA (1917 - 1990) "Mexican Vaquero," 10" x 8", oil on canvas. Early Cowboy Artists of America painter Nicholas Firfires grew up living and learning the cowboy way of life, from breaking horses to herding cattle. His time on the big ranches of California would inform his themes as a painter and illustrator. In 1969 he won the Silver Medal Award for watercolor in the Fourth Annual Exhibit of the Cowboy Artists of America, and his work often focused on contemporary and historic western scenes in a realist and sometimes impressionistic way.
