International Museum of Art & Science
On EXHIBITION at UTRGV - The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley: Mujeres Innovadoras: Cultural Artistry Over Time August 9, 2025 – December 18, 2025 at UTRGV Main Campus Library The IMAS is grateful for the support from and collaboration with the UTRGV Center for Latin American Arts and the UTRGV Main Campus Library for hosting this outreach exhibition on campus. UTRGV summer interns were able to research, curate, install, and exhibit a selection of works from the IMAS Mexican and Latin American Folk Art Collection. The exhibit examines the important, yet often-overlooked role women play in the transmission of traditional knowledge in communities in Mexico. The exhibit will be up for the Fall 2025 semester. The practice, by women, of traditional artforms in their communities highlights mastery, adaptation, and innovation through the use of new and different materials, concepts, and cultural influences. It is all too common for the contributions of women to be overlooked in history, Mujeres Innovadoras: Cultural Artistry Over Time presents not only the work, tools, and traditions of talented craftswomen but also the ways in which they create and sustain their communities. The works presented embody the sense of comfort and belonging these women help cultivate, while carrying forward traditions that continue to inspire future generations.

🤝 Strengthening Binational Industry Collaboration Today, our representative in Mexico, Angel Ortiz, proudly represented the McAllen Economic Development Corporation at an important event in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, hosted by our partners at Index Reynosa. The annual expo brought together local officials, the President of Index Reynosa, maquiladora managers, and the regional business community, creating a dynamic platform for industry leaders to discuss trade conditions, tariffs, and supply chain opportunities while connecting with suppliers across the region. Angel joined our friends and partners to support this effort, highlighting McAllen EDC’s ongoing commitment to strengthening cross-border collaboration and maintaining close partnerships with our manufacturing and industrial companies in Mexico. 👏 Congratulations to Alfredo Guajardo, President of Index Reynosa, the Board of Directors, Executive Director Luis Mendez, and the entire Index Reynosa team on organizing another successful and impactful event. Industry collaboration is key to ensuring that McAllen and Reynosa remain a leading binational destination for industrial growth and investment. #BinationalGrowth #McAllenEDC #IndexReynosa #EconomicDevelopment #Manufacturing #Trade #IndustrialGrowth #Partnerships #Reynosa #McAllen

The cool front seems to have brought Monarch butterflies along with it! We've been seeing good numbers of Monarchs through the park today as they continue their migration south into Mexico. It's encouraging to see them at gardens planted as part of the Mayor's Monarch Pledge initiative here in McAllen - once again highlighting the value of adding native plants into our urban landscapes. If you've planted a butterfly garden, we'd love to know what butterflies you're seeing lately - let us know in the comments!

📚 #STBF Author Session: The Witches of El Paso Author Luis Jaramillo joins the South Texas Book Festival for “The Witches of El Paso: A Book Discussion” at Main Library (4001 N. 23rd St.) on Saturday, October 25 at 12:30PM, followed by a book signing. In “The Witches of El Paso,” Jaramillo takes readers between 1940s El Paso, colonial Mexico, and the present day in a story about Nena, a teenage girl with strange visions, and her grandniece Marta, a lawyer caring for an aging Nena who holds on to secrets from another lifetime. When Marta agrees to help her search for a daughter lost to the past, old powers begin to stir, and both women are pulled into a world where magic and memory refuse to stay buried. This plática explores family, power, and how the past always finds its way back. Details: www.southtexasbookfestival.com

📚 #STBF Author Session: My Mother Cursed My Name In “My Mother Cursed My Name,” the Olivares women have always tried to control their daughters’ lives, starting with their names. When Felicitas finally meets her abuela Olvido, she’s shocked to learn two things—Olvido isn’t your warm, fuzzy kind of grandma, and she’s a ghost with unfinished business. Author Anamely Salgado Reyes, who grew up between the RGV and Mexico, brings this story to life at the South Texas Book Festival. The discussion will take place at Main Library (4001 N. 23rd St.) in Meeting Room A on Saturday, October 25 at 11:30AM, followed by a book signing in the Computer Lab from 12:30–1:30PM. It’s a story about family, memory, and the things we inherit—whether we asked for them or not. Details: www.southtexasbookfestival.com
