Two Mexican Masks - The Tigre (jaguar) and the Dance of the Moors and the Christians (Moros y Cristianos) are storied symbols in popular festival dances and each have a long history. This rare tigre mask was made by Filiberto Lopez Ortiz, a mask maker of great skill who gained recognition for his talent from his native Oaxaca all the way to Mexico City, and this mask is one of the few that bears his signature. Definitely rare and collectible. Regarding the prevalence of the jaguar image in Mexican culture, Donald Cordry, in his book Mexican Masks, states, the jaguar was and is the single most important animal to the Indians of Central and Southern Mexico. A symbol of war, these were not wars just of conquest, but "flower wars", that were waged to obtain captives to be sacrificed to the gods. He further states that the symbol of the jaguar was more than a representation of the courage and violence implicit in the animal itself, the jaguar was a god in its own right and a model for the Indian way of life. The second mask would be used in the Dance of the Moors and Christians. Likely the first Christian dance introduced to Mexico which was recorded as far back as 1524 when it was presented to Cortes in Coatzacoalcos. It has remained one of the most popular festival dances since then, due to it's representation of good vs evil. Created as part of the Holy Crusade to convert the Mexican Indigenous groups to Christianity, it now comprises an entire group of dances with many variations that over the years have given mask makers and Santeros the ability to show off their unique artistry and talent. Both of these masks are on display and available for purchase. Take home a rare and collectible piece of art today! We are open Monday thru Friday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday by appointment. #nuevosantandergallery #texasartgallery #mexicanfolkart #mexicanmask #mexicandancemasks #tigremask #tigré #morosycristianos

Pearl Harbor Day 🇺🇸 | December 7, 1941 Tomorrow, we pause to Honor the Americans whose lives were forever changed on this day 84 years ago. A quiet Sunday morning turned into one of the darkest moments in our nation’s history and one of the greatest displays of courage the world has ever seen. 2,403 Americans were killed. Hundreds more were wounded. And countless families received news that shattered their world. But amid the smoke, chaos, and fear, ordinary men and women showed extraordinary bravery. Sailors fought through fire. Medics risked their lives to pull others to safety. Service members stood their ground, not knowing if help would arrive in time. This is the legacy we remember today. Not just the attack, but the sacrifice, the valor, and the resilience of those who stood firm when the world changed around them. To the Heroes we lost, and to the families who still carry their memory: We see you. We Honor you. We will never forget. Let us live each day with the gratitude their sacrifice deserves.

A little slice of fake pie and a side of history, babe 😌🍒 I made a CHERRY PIE CAKE (yes… cake 👀) for Thanksgiving and served up a mini-lecture on James Lambeth because your girl can bake and educate. If your dessert isn’t cute and scholarly, wyd? 🤓💁🏻♀️ Come get a slice of delicious deception at CC’s Sweets

🗣️ cake lovers!! it’s time to shine a spotlight on something epic! ✨ Day 345 of me making cake slabs a thing (because who needs FETCH when we have this kind of magic?). 😉 Carrot Cake Baklava. Think layers of carrot cake with crispy phyllo, honey, candied pistachios, and a swirl of Swiss meringue buttercream on top. And yes, it’s as dreamy as it sounds. 🥕✨ Lemon Coconut slab: coconut cake meets lemon curd, topped with a bruléed lemon slice and a crunchy coconut piece that’s pure perfection. 🍋🥥 I used “Keep Goin’” by @takeaslynn as the audio because we’re on a mission to inspire and make these slabs go viral. So if you believe in cake magic, share this post and come snag a slice before they disappear. Let’s make cake slab history together! 💃🍰

Huge thanks to Isabel Cañas for joining us at this year's South Texas Book Festival. Your stories of folklore, love, and survival gave us chills in the best way. We loved hearing how history and horror intertwine in your work. #STBF #AuthorSpotlight
